Hello!
Autodesk has released the AutoCAD 2017! Just for the record this happened in 03/21/2016.
In my opinion, AutoCAD was and remains the best program for drafting, 2D and 3D designing.
AutoCAD 2017 is not full of a big number of updates, but some of them are very necessary and important for users and CAD managers.
My review of new and updated features in AutoCAD 2017 will consist of four parts:
- What's New in AutoCAD 2017 (Part 1). Overview
- What's New in AutoCAD 2017 (Part 2). User Interface, Commands and new graphics system
- What's New in AutoCAD 2017 (Part 3). PDF Import, Share Design View and 3D Printing
- What's New in AutoCAD 2017 (Part 4). Changes in API and Developer's Documentation
Let's get started!
AutoCAD 2017 (Part 1). Overview
AutoCAD logo and launch icon has been changed
System Requerements
Let's look at the system requirements. There are little difference with previous version and it's fine!
System requirements for AutoCAD 2017
| |
---|---|
Operating System |
|
CPU Type | 1 GHz Min 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor |
RAM | For 32-bit AutoCAD 2017:
|
Display Resolution | 1360x768 (1600x1050 or higher recommended) with True Color |
Display Card | Windows display adapter capable of 1360x768 and DirectX 9. DirectX 11 compliant card recommended. |
Disk Space | 6 GB |
Browser | Windows Internet Explorer 9.0 (or later) |
.NET Framework | .NET Framework 4.6 |
Additional Requirements for Large Datasets, Point Clouds, and 3D Modeling | |
---|---|
RAM | 8 GB or greater |
Disk Space | 6 GB |
Видеокарта | 1600x1050 or greater video display adapter with 128 MB VRAM or greater; Pixel Shader 3.0 or greater; Direct3D-capable workstation class graphics card |
Примечание | 64-bit Operating Systems are recommended if you are working with Large Datasets, Point Clouds and 3D Modeling and required if you are using the Model Documentation feature of AutoCAD |
Major changes - AutoCAD 2017 officially support Windows 10, increased requirements for minimum screen resolution (1360x768 againts 1024x768 in AutoCAD 2016).
DWG file format version
AutoCAD 2017 uses the same AutoCAD 2013 DWG format (official full name AC1027 AutoCAD 2013/2014/2015/2016)
The new AutoCAD 2017 supports TrustedDWG technology like previous versions. Let me remind you that TrustedDWG appeared in AutoCAD and products based on it since the 2007 version and is designed to guarantee the integrity and inerrancy of DWG files created in Autodesk products.
TrustedDWG functionality in Autodesk software identifies DWG files that were not last saved by an Autodesk product.
When you open the DWG file, AutoCAD checks the file to the correct format and issues a message that the file is actually created in AutoCAD or on the basis of its programs and the status bar icon appears TrustedDWG the Autodesk file format.
If the file was created or saved in a third-party program, AutoCAD will inform the user about possible errors in the file, and the incompatibility of the loss of data integrity
Autodesk Desktop App
Autodesk Desktop App is a content delivery application. It replaces the previous in-product update components and the Autodesk Application Manager.
How it works? When a hot fix, service pack or security patch becomes available, Autodesk desktop app sends a notification alert on the system tray. Clicking the link in the notification launches Autodesk desktop app and opens the Updates tab. The Updates tab provides relevant details about the update. Users can install the update at the click of a button.
The Updates tab collects all available updates for the Autodesk products installed on the computer.
Autodesk Desktop App does not require sign-in. However, it provides the most value when you’re signed in. If you do not yet have an Autodesk account, you can create one.
Migrate Custom Settings Utility
New Migrate Custom Settings Utility in AutoCAD 2017 has become more beautiful and more functional. It detects and clearly identifies customized settings enabling you to choose which ones you wish to migrate.
License Manager
AutoCAD 2017 introduces a new License Manager which allows you to switch between license types (local, network or trial) and save your files when a network license loses connection with the License Manager.
You no longer choose your license type and enter a serial number during the install process. Instead, you select the type of license when you first launch the program.
When you running AutoCAD in trial mode, the Infocenter clearly indicates the number of trial days remaining.
You can access the License Manager from the new option in the Infocenter menu or from the About box.
The License Manager gives you information about the software license as well as installed plug-ins, add-ons, and extensions that use Autodesk licensing. You can also change the type of license or, if you’re running AutoCAD in trial mode, you can activate it.
If you are using a network license and you lose your connection to the license server, you’ll get a message saying so.
System prompts you to Save drawings and quit. If you choose to Continue working, a six-minute timer starts counting down. The message is repeated at the four- and two-minute marks. Each time you choose to continue working, the clock continues its countdown until it closes automatically. If you choose to save drawings and quit, you’re prompted only for unnamed open drawings. All other drawings are automatically saved.

It's very good new feature because in earlier versions of the license loss leads to loss of any unsaved changes in the working files.
In next time we look at the changes in User Interface, Commands and new graphics system in AutoCAD 2017. Thanks for joining me and stay tuned!
Sincerely yours
